Mariah Carey has become the latest celebrity to find herself at the center of a nip slip scandal. Carey performed at Tuesday night's So So Def 20th Anniversary Party in a strapless dress that was so tight, her left nipple forced itself out of the top of her dress in a desperate gasp for air.
Carey is the latest in a long line of A-list celebrities to get caught flashing unintentional areola. In fact, the "nip slip" has become something of a right of passage for today's biggest stars--a surefire way to land them in the headlines and a chance to let their flair for exhibitionism "accidentally" shine. The trend took hold after Janet Jackson's 2004 bare breasted display during the Super Bowl halftime show--for which the term "wardrobe malfunction" was initially coined.
As women's wear has become increasingly less modest and long range telephoto lenses have become increasingly more powerful, it seems that almost every major awards show features at least one mammary overshare in the next morning's headlines.
Producers for the 2013 Grammy Awards reportedly told attendees to dress more modestly than usual to avoid just such a headline.
