Just as my previous article highlights the bands that received the most listens in 2013, I also like to share the albums that were being spun the most. Classic, new, obscure, any of these could make the grade. Hopefully, readers, this will be a launching pad for some new albums for you to check out in the upcoming year!
10. 3 Inches of Blood - Long Live Heavy Metal
Not the best album these guys have put out, but one of the better ones. Long Live Heavy Metal brought back the elements that made Advance and Vanquish such a good album and for anyone looking for a great heavy metal album that mixes clean and growl vocals with some awesome music this is one to check out!
9. Lacuna Coil - Shallow Life
Strangely enough, just as Long Live Heavy Metal was the fifth album by 3 Inches of Blood, this is the fifth act by Italian female fronted band Lacuna Coil. Also, this is not their best work but one of the better ones coming behind the pristine Comalies. Critics seemed to think this album was one of their more accessible ones, and I guess I would agree but it lacks a little something in the Lacuna Coil cannon.
8. In This Moment - Blood
In this Moment is always a fun band to listen too. It feels like each of their albums is a different facet to the larger idea the members have for themselves. This one delves into a little more electronic and drops the metalcore aspect almost completely. Not as good as their 2008 album The Dream but definitely worth a listen for anyone into female fronted metal bands.
7. Symphony X - Iconoclast
My favorite album from 2011, I still cannot pull this from my stereo. I'll start listening and then I cannot stop repeating tracks, the albums, everything! This is one of the most complete albums out there and anyone into metal, prog, great lyrics and vocals should go out and give it a listen!
6. 3 Inches of Blood - Advance and Vanquish
Twice on this chart?!? 3 Inches of Blood make a second appearance with their strongest and original album that got me into the band. The music, dual vocal work, and lyrics are all the strongest this band has put together on this one. Anyone into those aspects or looking for a great album to rock out too, should go out and pick this one up. I've almost run my disc down to nothing the amount of times I've spun it.
5. Lacuna Coil - Comalies
Just as the stronger version of the previous 3 Inches of Blood made it into the list, the stronger Lacuna Coil work also worked its way up the charts letting the newer album know it still means business and dominates the airwaves. Check it out, you will not be disappointed. This is another disc that has been almost worn down to nothing with the amount of play it gets.
4. Skillet - Comatose
This is one of my favorite albums of all times. There is not a single bad song on this album and all the tunes can hold an abundance of meanings within them. With a catchy musical score and fantastic lyrics, there is nothing lacking in this release and remains Skillet's best album to date.
3. Adrenaline Mob - Omerta
One of the top albums released in 2012, Omerta remains a tour de force listen through the super group potential of Mike Prtnoy (Dream Theatre) and Russell Allen (Symphony X) leading the way. They released a covers album this year Coverta that was pretty awesome and also highly recommended. They will be releasing a new album next year without Portnoy and that is highly anticipated.
2. "Weird Al" Yancovich - Alpocalypse
Mixing things up from the metal and rock, "Weird Al" always provides an amusing satire to the popular music of the day and anyone looking for some fun music should check it out. Can't be straight guitars and metal all the time. Variety is the spice of life, get out and explore the other genres a little...much like the top album that I listened to this year...
1. Thomas Newman - Skyfall Soundtrack
For some reason this was my preferred album to listen to in the car. Just the music that accompanied Bond on his travels within the film just provided the best background for navigating the messy Boston streets and highways during rush hour. The film was fantastic and if you have not seen it, that is another recommendation for you, but the score it also one of the better ones and that is coming from someone who does not listen to soundtracks often.
I hope you enjoyed this list and will hopefully check out the Top 10 bands I listened to in 2013 that was published a little before this one. Soon to come is the Top Releases in 2013, but feel free to comment with any of the aforementioned suggestions you may have checked out to leave your opinion on the music. As always thank you for reading and hope you will check out the other articles I have written!
