On this day in 1994 Kurt Cobain's body is discovered in his Seattle home by an electrician sent to install a burglar alarm.  (Cobain is believed to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound three days earlier. The Nirvana song "Come As You Are" takes on new meaning with the line, "I swear that I don't have a gun.")

On this day in 1994 The Offspring's breakthrough disc Smash is released. (Due in part to the previous success of the singles "Come Out and Play" and "Self Esteem", the CD eventually becomes one of the best selling independent records of all time, selling more than 15 million copies worldwide.)

On this day in 2001 Van Stephenson, singer-songwriter of BlackHawk, dies at the age of 47.  Also on this day Pedro Depestre Gonzales, violinist for Buena Vista Social Club, dies at the age of 55.
