Tips for using dating web sites

Looking for a dating web site specific to Ann Arbor? Except for craigslist and some signs posted along the road, there really isn't one. Some of the best known sites are Match.com, which seems to have merged with Chemistry.com; and eHarmony.com, which used to have the most exclusive matching criteria Newer sites are Zoosk and Plenty of Fish. There are specific websites based on age (OurTime.com and SeniorPeopleMeet.com) and religion (ChristianMingle and Jdate) True, you can sort by how close people live, and those other factors, on national sites. Using the search features well is key.

Use a photo

Use a good photo. Don't use one that has your ex in it, or is cut out with a mysterious arm around you. Most sites don't want any nudity, even bare torsos of guys showing off their abs. People who have pictures are said to get 9 or ten times as many responses as people who don't, but people who don't have a picture are more likely to answer you.

Answer the profile questions honestly

Especially if you have strong opinions about any of the common deal breakers like smoking, drinking, racial preference, and religious preference. Also be honest about if you.have kids, or want kids, and your age. Does the phrase “Garbage in, garbage out” sound familiar? Might as well give the computer the information it needs do a good job with the matchmaking.

Safety First

True.com does background checks before people can communicate, but also warns the checks are not foolproof. eHarmony doesn't show photos to non-paying members. Most dating sites warn you not to put your address in your profile. Most also charge money for allowing actual contact, except for certain times, so I'm a bit cynical about their reasons for protecting your contact information. I also think people really should meet soon to avoid situations like the Manti Te'o hoax, and other deceptions shown on the movie and reality show Catfish. But still, don't immediately give away your information, meet in a public place, and read this information.
