'The Vampire Diaries' episode 4.12 'A View to a Kill': The 10 best moments

Concerned about his daughter, Bonnie's father brings in her mother to help tame Bonnie's wild, dark magic.  Bonnie fesses up and tells her mother about the cure and confides that she wants to help her friends find it so that she can change her back into a human.  Bonnie's mom answers, "I'm not the one that needs to be saved, you are."  With that, she puts her hand (which is filled with a mysterious green powder) over Bonnie's mouth, making her instantly fall asleep.Bonnie comes to and hears her mother talking about a plan to bring in other witches to cleanse Bonnie's mind of all that Shane has taught her.  Bonnie startles her mother by answering, "That's not happening."  She uses her powers to smash the bowl in her mother's hand and tells her, "I don't belong to the spirits anymore, I belong to myself."  With that, she turns and walks out the front door.Knowing that Stefan wants the dagger so that they can take out Kol, Rebekah pulls it from her boot and hands it over to him.  She tells him, "You're right, I do care.  I want stupid, koala corsages and a prom.  I want to have kids with someone who loves me enough to stand outside my window with a stupid boom box.  I want to be human.  So let Klaus put down my brother and let's go find the cure."This is the first time Rebekah has shown real human-like emotion and it's a nice change of pace to see that underneath her tough, viscous Original persona, she's really just a girl.Rebekah is disappointed when the 80s decade dance is canceled by Bonnie's father.  Stefan needs to get Rebekah out of her house so that Matt can look for the dagger, so he offers to take Rebekah to the dance.  They sneak into the school gym and have their own private event. Stefan acting as DJ, chooses the perfect song for their dance, Lovesong by The Cure.  They share a sweet moment together before they begin to dance.View the list »

The Jan. 31 episode of "The Vampire Diaries" season 4, episode 12, "A View to a Kill" was undoubtedly one of the best of the season. Fans were treated to an hour of shocking revelations, emotional moments and a surprising death. Warning, if you missed the episode, spoilers are ahead!

This episode saw Bonnie coming into her own as a witch. In the past, Bonnie has been quite timid and reluctant to fully embrace her magic. After losing her powers, she didn't think she would ever practice magic again. Professor Shane opened her eyes to "Expression" which is a form of dark magic, and Bonnie's really changed! She's confident and strong, but will she be able to keep this new magic under control?

The episode also showcased two of the show's couples, Damon and Elena and Stefan and Rebekah. Damon and Elena are finally reunited and they greet each other with a warm embrace. Stefan and Rebekah start the episode on uncertain terms, but by the end of the hour, they open up to each other and grow closer.

Most exciting of all was the death of Kol. His fiery death in the Gilbert house will certainly have repercussions, especially when Klaus escapes capture!

  • After Kol declines Elena's offer for a truce, he goes on a rampage and goes after the Gilbert siblings.  He impales Elena with a piece of wood from her banister and goes after Jeremy.  Kol threatens to cut off both of Jeremy's arms with a meat cleaver to ensure that the map to the cure is never completed. Just as he's about to bring the knife down, Elena frees herself and launches her body into him, knocking him off balance.  She holds him while Jeremy grabs the hose from the sink and douses him in vervain-filled water.  While he's incapacitated, Elena tosses Jeremy the white oak stake and Jeremy stabs Kol in the chest. Kol ignites into flames and walks around a bit before he finally falls down and dies.  Unfortunately, Klaus is at the front door and witnessed the whole event.
  • Just when things are about to get ugly, Bonnie arrives and uses her magic on Klaus.  She instructs Jeremy to invite Klaus inside and he follows her orders.  Once inside, Bonnie leads Klaus to the living room and uses her magic to trap him inside. Klaus is furious and savagely pounds on the invisible barrier.  He screams at Bonnie, "Witch, you can't do this to me!"  Calm and cool as a cucumber, Bonnie answers, "You have no idea what I can do now."  Klaus shouts, "I will hunt all of you to your end!  Do you hear me?  Do you?"  Bonnie, Jeremy and Elena leave the house, leaving Klaus trapped.
  • Elena and Damon haven't been around each other in quite some time and they've been missing each other intensely.  First, Damon was away helping Jeremy hone his hunter skills and when he finally invited Elena to come to him, Kol's antics got in the way.Kol compelled Damon to kill Jeremy, so Damon had to be kept under lock and key.  Elena wasn't allowed to visit, because Damon could have used the sire bound to demand to be let free. Kol's death means that Damon can be set free and the two greet each other with a huge hug.  Damon says, "Sorry I missed all the excitement," but Elena smiles and answers," I'm just happy to see you."
  • Once Stefan arrives, they begin to plan their path to the cure.  Elena assumes that Stefan has daggered Rebekah and when she learns that he didn't, she's incredulous.  She asks him, "Why would you possibly think that you could trust her?"  Damon is happy to use the awkward moment to his advantage and he answers, "Let me guess, she pledged her allegiance to you while you were naked in the sack." The news hits Elena like a ton of bricks.  Even though they are no longer together, she can't be happy that Stefan spent the night with her arch enemy – the girl who was responsible for her death!
  • The next top moment comes only seconds after the previous one.  Stefan is angry that Damon spilled the beans about him and Rebekah.  The brothers begin to argue and Elena urges them to stop.  Stefan icily says, "Why don't you tell her to calm down, Damon.  You've managed to use that sire bound pretty well so far, haven't you?"With that, Damon punches Stefan in the face and knocks him to the floor.  Stefan deserved that!
  • Just when Stefan and Damon are about to engage in a full-out fight, Jeremy screams and tears off his shirt.  "It's happening!" he states and Elena whispers, "Oh my god."  Jeremy asks, "You can see it?"  and it's clear that they all do.  The group stands in shock as the mark completes itself on Jeremy's chest.  "Here we go!" Damon says and that's the end of the episode.Next week, the group will travel to an isolated island with Shane to find the cure.  Will they be successful?
