Variety reported big news Thursday in the casting of the upcoming “Man of Steel” Batman-Superman movie. Christian Bale would not be reprising his role as Batman but instead Ben Affleck would be taking over the role opposite Henry Cavill’s Superman. Immediately disappointment exploded on Twitter Thursday and the hashtag #BetterBatmanThanBenAffleck was born.
There are no harsher critics than fans of action and sci-fi movies; they take their casting very seriously. Does anyone remember the Tom Cruise announcement for “Interview with the Vampire” and the backlash that followed?
How does the decision to cast Affleck stand up next to Michael Keaton’s dark portrayal of the tortured superhero in the first two movies or Val Kilmer’s suave performance in “Batman Forever”? According to fans, disaster is an understatement.
Affleck will be the eighth actor to play Bruce Wayne but he is by far the least accepted, even worse than George Clooney’s failed attempt in the 1997 movie Batman and Robin. His recent success with “Argo” does not seem qualify him to play such a beloved superhero in the eyes of fans.
This is not Affleck’s first superhero role. Many will remember his disappointing performance in 2003s “Daredevil” and as George Reeves, TVs Superman in “Hollywoodland”.
While the hashtag #BetterBatmanThanBenAffleck has prompted some to give an honest opinion of who they would like to see play the superhero, most of the chatter surrounds the ridiculousness suggestions for the role. Check out the list of possible better candidates suggested by the Twitterverse’s most loyal “Batman” fans.
