It's almost Valentine's Day and with all the love in the air it’s easy to think of the beloved couples in Cassandra Clare’s Internationally popular Mortal Instruments series. One of the many reasons I love The Mortal Instruments is that it isn’t centered around a romance. Of course there are romances that we love but the story is driven by other intense conflicts rather than love. However, it’s still the romances that get fans the most fired up when it comes to this series.
Here’s a look at some of The Mortal Instruments couples that we love. NOTE: This list does contain spoilers to “City of Bones,” City of Ashes,” “City of Glass,” City of Fallen Angels,” “City of Lost Souls.”

Clary and Jace
The story began with Clary and her desperate attempt to find her missing mother and navigate her new, mysterious life. However, through her struggles one person has always been a constant and swoon worthy favorite—Jace Wayland. “City of Bones” throws a serious monkey wrench into their budding relationship but in true Clary/Jace fashion they prevail. Now fans can’t wait to see how their love story continues (or doesn’t) in the final Mortal Instruments book, “City of Heavenly Fire” due out this May.
Last summer Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower brought the chemistry of Jace and Clary to life on the big screen in “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.”
Simon and Isabelle
What seems like an unlikely pair at first has grown on many fans as we’ve seen it develop through the series. In true Clare fashion this couple does not have it easy. A vampire and highly skilled Shadowhunter would seem like an odd couple but these two make it work. We learned in the last book why Isabelle may seem hesitant towards a relationship but who better to give it a try with than loveable, loyal Simon.
Though they get together later in the series I couldn’t help but smile when seeing these two share screen time in last summers “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” film.
Jocelyn and Luke
This is a couple that always makes me smile. They are a great example of a friendship that has developed into something more (or at least that’s the story for Jocelyn.) Luke has always been there for Jocelyn and now is always there for Clary. Cassandra Clare has said that “City of Heavenly Fire” will include two weddings. As Jocelyn and Luke are currently planning a wedding in “City of Lost Souls” many are guessing that these two will be a couple to say “I do.”
In addition to just loving Jocelyn and Luke I also want to say that I love Luke and Clary’s relationship. He is a true father figure and someone that always has her best interest at heart throughout all that the world is throwing at her.
Jocelyn and Valentine
It’s hard to talk about couples from Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series without talking about Jocelyn and Valentine. Obviously these two are a thing of the past but them being together is what gave the Shadowhunters Clary. Unfortunately their marriage also resulted in Sebastian but none the less at one time this was a very powerful and important couple.
Jocelyn is a good person and good mother. I often wonder what she saw in Valentine other than his charisma. Luckily fans will get to know more about this couple in a planned Manga series centered around Valentine and his Circle.
Maia and Jordan
Maia Roberts and Jordan Kyle are newer characters in the series and their relationship certainly has cause for conflict. It was Jordan who turned his girlfriend Maia into a werewolf. Yes, that would be a good reason to be mad at each other. However, these two adorable lovebirds are working on their issues despite the intense conflicts around them. I’m looking forward to more of this couple in “City of Heavenly Fire!”
Magnus and Alec
And yes I’m saving the best for last. Magnus and Alec AKA Malec are just awesome. Recently I tweeted asking followers who their favorite Mortal Instruments couple was and nearly every reply was about Malec. I do not believe that Alec and Magnus are popular because of their orientation. I believe it’s because of their strength and endurance through the series’ conflicts.
Their relationship has also experienced its share of conflict, the biggest being the issue of immortality. I know that their relationship and its future is a great area of concern for many as the world awaits the finale.
