The visual has always walked hand in hand with the aural when it comes to music. For example, play a country and western song and a certain type of imagery will come to mind. The same is true for the genre of heavy metal, so much so that even the subgenres have different imagery associated with them.
One interesting component of imagery in the heavy metal genre is that of the mascot. Not all bands have a mascot, of course, but those that do have for the most part used them effectively to promote the essence of their bands. Mascots are particularly useful to “brand” a band so that is can distinguish itself from all others. In the crowded world of heavy metal, a mascot can prove invaluable.
The following list chronicles some of the mascots of heavy metal. This list is by no means complete, but it does demonstrate the variety of mascots used in the metal world and how their design punctuates a band’s musical genre.
