On Monday August 11, 2014 Academy Award winning actor and comedian Robin Williams was found dead at his home in the Bay Area. At the time, Authorities said his death appeared to be a suicide and that further details would come later. On Tuesday The Marin County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference and indicated that a forensic examination had been conducted by the Sheriff’s Office Chief Forensic Pathologist, Dr. Joseph Cohen.
Keith Boyd, who is a Lieutenant with the Marin County Sheriff’s Office and also serves as the Assistant Chief Deputy Coroner delivered a prepared statement during Tuesday’s press conference. Lieutenant Boyd detailed the events as revealed during the investigation; leading up to Williams’ body being discovered.
10:30 P.M. August 10 – Williams’ wife retired for the evening; that last time she saw him alive.
10:30 A.M. August 11 – Williams’ wife leaves home believing her husband to be asleep in another bedroom in the home.
11:45 A.M. August 11 – Williams’ personal assistant is worried that he hasn’t responded to repeated knocks at his bedroom door. The assistant eventually enters the room to find Williams unresponsive with a belt around his neck.
11:55 A.M. August 11 - Marin County Communications receives a 9-1-1 call from a distraught caller reporting an unconscious adult male who had appeared to have committed suicide.
12:00 P.M. August 11 - the Tiburon Fire Department and Southern Marin Fire Protection District arrived at the scene.
12:02 P.M. August 11 - The Tiburon Fire Department identify the victim as 63 year old Robin McLaurin Williams; the resident of the home.
Lieutenant Boyd noted that when Williams was discover, he was cool to the touch and that rigor mortis has set in. He also commented on Dr. Cohen’s examination saying,
The forensic examination, conducted by Dr. Joseph Cohen who is the Sheriff’s Office Chief Forensic Pathologist, did not reveal any injuries indicating Mr. Williams had been in a struggle or physical altercation prior to him being located deceased. The preliminary results of the forensic examination revealed supporting physical signs that Mr. Williams life ended from asphyxia due to hanging.
The Coroner’s Office has sent samples from Williams for toxicology testing and the cause of death will not be certified until those results come back. After news of Williams’ passing, celebrities and fans alike tweeted their condolences.
Robin Williams captured the attention and laughter of the world in his portrayal of the alien Mork first as a guest appearance “Happy Days” then on “Mork & Mindy”. Williams would go on to cement his career on film in the now classics, “The World According to Garp,” “Good Morning Vietnam,” “Hook,” “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “Good Will Hunting”. He had just wrapped up his return to television in the CBS comedy “The Crazy Ones” where he co-starred with actress Sarah Michelle Gellar.
