The big scoop

The Big Scoop

Spring has sprung, the temperatures are rising and that means my craving for ice cream is coming to a boil. And living in the South I guess I’ve gotten used to two things when the weather heats up. The heat and fried foods. So I like to bump up my cholesterol a smidge by cooling off with some fried ice cream.

Deep-fried ice cream? Hey, it’s the South.

The ice cream sundae and deep-fried ice cream both made their debut at the 1893 Chicago World Fair and they’ve been around ever since. I know what alert readers are thinking. “Can’t he cook anything normal?” If Chi-Chi-s can do it, then so can I.

As we kick it in to another hot sultry summer let’s explore a sexy take on an American standard. Let’s put the skeptics to rest and try these tasty treats at home, shall we?

Use your imagination when frying ice cream. Fresh cut fruit, hot fudge, flavored whipped cream. For a Mexican style fried ice cream, use crushed tortilla chips instead of cornflakes. Many Mexican fried ice creams are drizzled with honey or agave nectar. If you can’t use agave nectar use margarita mix. Substitute pistachios or macadamia nuts for peanuts or walnuts.

Face it, it’s going to get hot there before you know it, so cool down with some fried ice cream.
