The best Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Super Bowl

Leslie O'Neal Tries to tackle San Francisco's Steve Young in Super Bowl XXIX in 1995. O'Neal led the Chargers with 12.5 sacks that year and registered 132 over his 13-year career. He was named All-Pro that season, and moved on to play for the Rams and Chiefs for the next four seasons. O'Neal made a splash as a rookie defensive end, registering 12.5 sacks, and had two interceptions. He also scored his only touchdown of his career that year.Dexter Manley was known as the Secretary of Defense, and was a star linebacker for the Redskins from 1981 to 1989 and was in three Super Bowl games. In 1986 he recorded 18.5 sacks and had 97 while in Washington. He was a starter and linebacker for all three Super Bowls in which he played. Thurman Thomas had more success than anyone in Super Bowls among former Oklahoma State players. He played in four consecutive Super Bowls and is the first player to score a touchdown in four consecutive Super  owls.  In Super Bowl XXV he ran for 135 yards and a touchdown, and caught five passes for 55 yards. Four former Oklahoma State players are playing in the 2013 Super Bowl, two each for the 49ers and Ravens. A total of 17 former Oklahoma State players have made 29 appearances n the ultimate championship game in football.

Offensive lineman Jon Kolb made four appearances with the Steelers, and Thurman Thomas made four with the Buffalo Bills. Dexter Manley made three appearances wtih the Redskins. Walt Garrison was there twice with the Cowboys; TErry Brown twice with the Vikings and Charlie Johnson twice with the Colts. Jack Golden made it with different teams, with the Giants and the Buccaneers.

This year four players are there but only two will likely see action. Kendall Hunter of the 49ers and Ryan McBean of the Ravens are both in injured reserve. Billy Bajema with the Ravens and Perrish Cox with the 49ers are both active.

A few times they have played against each other. In Super Bowl IX, Terry Brown playing for Minnesota and Jon Kolb was playing for Pittsburgh. In Super Bowl XXV, Johnson Washington was playing for the Redskins, and Thurman Thomas and Matt Monger were playing for the Buffalo Bills.

  • Charlie Johnson celebrates with the Vince Lombardi trophy in Feb. 2007. Johnson started 12 games in 2009 at left tackle and helped protect Peyton Manning during the Colts' march to the Super Bowl.  He started at tackle in the Super Bowl at the end of the year. He played five seasons for the Colts and the last two seasons for the Minnesota Vikings.
