It is so refreshing to see a show that empowers African American women. Too many shows are more focused on the drama and ratings that they forget about liberating women of color. Growing up as a little black girl, there were not many, if any, publications or shows with women of color. Black Girls Rock! is all about empowering youth through their mentoring program. It was established in 2006 and the organization is “dedicated to the healthy development of young women and girls. BLACK GIRLS ROCK! seeks to build the self-esteem and self-worth of young women of color by changing their outlook on life, broadening their horizons and helping them to empower themselves.” This is more than an awards show. It is a movement that was started by Beverly Bond and she is determined to highlight the accomplishments of women of color. With the help of BET, it is a show dedicated to celebrating women of all shades. Let’s look at some of the best moments from 2013’s Black Girls Rock! . . .
