The Adventures of Mighty Bug leaps onto the stage at Center for Puppetry Arts

Morpha Butterfly interacts with the shadow and body puppets. The shadow puppets, like Bugville’s bees or Professor Rhinoceros Beetle, are 3-dimensional rod puppets or flat figures cut out of thin, strong plastic and do not actually touch the screen. They are performed in an “alley” between the shadow screen and several bright lights.The costumes for Adventures of Mighty Bug are colorful and well made.  They really help to transport the audience to the world the "bugs" are creating.  In this photo, Morpha Butterfly, Mighty Bug's love interest, holds court.  She is not the damsel in distress though, but rather helps Mighty Bug defeat Scorpiana.The Adventures of Mighty Bug is the current family production at Center for Puppetry Arts.  It is a fun puppet show with a little something for everyone.  The show uses a combination of puppets (shadow and body) and projections (digital and overhead) to create a truly interesting production.View the list »

The Center for Puppetry Arts has done it again! Their new production, The Adventures of Mighty Bug, is fun, lively, and holds the attention of even the antsiest kids. It is a superhero story that boys will love and a love story (of sorts) that girls will swoon for. There are also some built in adults-only jokes to make the moms and dads giggle.

"Welcome to Bugville, a jumpin’ little insect community that swings to the Bugville Boogie and the sweet sounds of WBUG Radio star Morpha Butterfly. Watching over the insect citizens is the one and only Mighty Bug, a superhero with super strength, smelling, hearing, and flying abilities. But Mighty Bug isn’t the only arthropod with an eye on Bugville. The evil arachnid Scorpiana has assembled a group to attack the town. Can Mighty Bug defeat the evil Scorpiana and save Bugville? Find out in this science-filled comic book style adventure!"

  • The evil Scorpiana can be a bit scary to toddlers but for most kids this was one villain that did not seem to frighten the youngest members of the audience.  Scorpiana is a costumed character wearing a detailed costume and mask to portray this character.
  • Don't worry, though Scorpiana, the villain in Adventures of Mighty Bug, seems a bit frightening in this photo, she is really quite harmless.  And Mighty Bug outsmarts her anyway in the end.  Fun fact: the puppeteer who plays Scorpiana is married to the puppeteer who plays Mighty Bug!
