There is a sea of great music out there across all genres that you most likely aren't going to hear on the radio every day or see on the various music video countdowns on television. If you're tired of Imagine Dragons, Pharrell, Beyonce, and One Republic, you fortunately have a wide array of alternatives out there. You just have to look for them. There are a lot to name, but allow me to recommend five of the most underrated artists out there right now making great and meaningful music.
I met this tiny, shy, and reserved woman in Washington, DC. She seemed so nervous to say 'hello,' that her hand trembled when we shook hands. Don't be fooled though. I've rarely seen anything that matches the raw intensity of Meg Myers. Much of her music comes from dark places and she performs it with primal screams equal to that of Kurt Cobain and the demeanor reminiscent of Zach de la Rocha. Her stand-out singles include "Heart Heart Head" and "Desire."
Irish singer/songwriter Gemma Hayes has been making music for more than a decade. With subject matter ranging from the lament of broken relationships to the flooring shock of new love, she has proven time again that her songwriting ability is some of the best of our time. Pair this talent with beautiful and flawless delivery and we see something special. Her stand-out singles include "Shock to My System" and "Let a Good Thing Go."
He's from Philly, looks up to Eddie Vedder, and is a helluva nice guy to chat with. Oh yeah, and he makes incredible music. Hause has been in the more underground side of the music industry for years formerly fronting the band The Loves Ones, then moving on to a successful solo career with touring slots on Chuck Ragan's Revival Tour and opening for Social Distortion. Hause pours his entire soul into his live performance and leaves the audience feeling that they have shared the emotion of his music right along with him on stage. His stand-out singles include "Pray for Tucson" and "The Shine."
English singer/songwriter Birdy is only 18-years-old, but she is making music far ahead of her time. Her music has topped charts in several European countries. Along with this, she has made a splash into the United States with songs featured in films such as "The Fault in Our Stars" and "The Hunger Games." When she finally does break, I expect her to have a long and successful career. Her stand-out singles include "Wings" and "The a Team."
Canadian-born, now local to Nashville, singer/songwriter Lindi Ortega has gone from the coffee house in her early musical career to now being the queen of what I like to call skull and bones country. Her tremendous voice delivers us songs about things such as holding onto our dreams, digging up a dead body, and possibly getting a little high. And yes, they are all great. Her live shows do her music better justice than the studio versions due to the passion she puts into her shows. She also may tell a strange story or two that will definitely bring a smile to your face. Her stand-out singles include "Cigarettes and Truckstops" and "Tin Star."
