With the deep freeze and historic lows behind us, many parents in the Mid-South are looking for ways to get their families back outside into the fresh air. Four local events offer a fun way to explore local attractions while breathing in the spring air.

Memphis Flower Show at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens

April 4-6, 2014

This year’s event is free and open to the public on Saturday, April 5 (9:00 – 6:00) and Sunday, April 6 (11:00 – 5:00). The flower show will be organized and presented by the Memphis Garden Club (MGC). Families will enjoy award-winning floral designs, original art, horticulture, botanical arts, photography, conservation, shopping in the courtyard (Billie's Pecans and More, Garden District, Millstone Market, Nest and Social) lunch by the Elegant Farmer in the pavilion and much more. This prestigious show draws horticulture and artistic judges and entries from GCA members locally and throughout the United States while reflecting the summation of the stated purpose of The Memphis Garden Club.

Monthly on the 1st Saturday

Led by a Shelby Farms Park Interpretive Docent, these one hour family fun hikes are great educational hikes for adults and children of all ages! Reservations are not required, but donations are appreciated. Participants are asked to remember to wear walking shows and appropriate outdoor clothing and to bring water bottles! Due to the tripping hazards, pets are not allowed.

Animals of the Night, Tropical Birdhouse

Join Memphis Zoo keepers as they take you behind the scenes at the Tropical Bird House and Animals of the Night. Come face-to-face with a bird of prey and meet an African penguin. Have you ever met a wombat or porcupine? Watch as keepers interact with nocturnal animals, giving them enrichment and special treats. After you've finished exploring, enjoy a dinner and silent auction with your keeper guides. Event begins once the gates close at 6 p.m. This event will sell out, so get your tickets now:
