Tavares hat trick helps undo best team in east, Islanders 5, Devils 1 (Photos)

It was the John Tavares show at the Coliseum last night where the New York Islanders superstar center tallied a hat trick and added an assist to help his team undo the smoking-hot New Jersey Devils 5-1.

So make that a five-game goal-scoring streak for Tavares and now 20 points in just 14 games on the season. Tavares is in a three-way tie for the NHL goal scoring lead (11 goals) with Pittsburgh Penguins’ James Neal and Buffalo Sabres’ Thomas Vanek.

With the win the Islanders just knocked off the best team in the Eastern Conference. The win follows a key victory against the archrival New York Rangers on Thursday night at the Garden.

The Isles move to 6-7-1 and will face the Philadelphia Flyers at home Monday afternoon. The Islanders would do themselves a huge favor if they can pull off the win. Both the Flyers and Islanders are fighting to get into playoff contention.
