Superbowl XLVII is upon us and all the excitement of this event is spilling into the media. But football in the United States has its own history, a fact recognized by the federal government in numerous stadiums listed on the National Register of Historic Places or acknowledged by historical markers.
As the Superbowl is less than 50 years old, very few of its venues have passed the 40 years that typically allows a place to try for historic status. Many of today's Superbowl-level stadiums are usually too modern and state-of-the-art to be listed yet, but several of their older predecessors have made the grade and have interesting stories to tell.
