A wind advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service in Albany, NY from 10 AM EDT, to 6 PM EDT Sunday. The advisory includes the following areas...
- Greater Capital District
- Upper & Mid Hudson Valley
A few weather features will come into place today to bring strong winds to the entire Capital Region, and especially the north-south oriented Hudson Valley.
- Departing, strong, high pressure will slowly move away from the region, off of the New England coast.
- Incoming low pressure over the Great Lakes will lift northward into southern Canada this morning, dragging a warm front through the region.
- The difference in pressure between these systems will induce a tightening, north-to-south, pressure gradient over the region. This tightening of the pressure gradient will in turn lead to the potential for strong winds.
With the passage of the warm front this morning, winds will increase in speed from the south and southwest over the entire region with sustained winds of 15 to 25 MPH expected. Channeling and funnelling effects up the Hudson Valley, due to the southerly wind direction up the valley, may lead to enhanced wind gusts over the advisory area.
A wind advisory is issued when the following conditions are expected to occur...
- Sustained wind speeds of 31 to 39 MPH
- Wind gusts of 46 to 57 MPH
Those travelling this afternoon should use caution. Trees limbs, branches, and power lines may be downed in such conditions, leading to sporadic power outages.
Conditions should slowly improve with the setting of the sun, and winds should begin to slacken to speeds below advisory criteria.
