When it comes to fashion at the Video Music Awards, anything goes, and the 2014 red carpet saw looks that ran the gamut. From Amber Rose’s throwback to Rose McGowan’s barely there look in 1997 to Miley Cyrus’ relatively tame leather crop top and pants, the star studded carpet was all over the place stylistically. Click through the slide show to see some of the highlights.
Jennifer Lopez continued to defy the laws of aging as she walked the red carpet in a stunning Charbel Zoe dress. The blinged out dress showed the perfect amount of skin for the occasion, and she paired it with some simple Jimmy Choo shoes. Keeping her hair down and her makeup simple helped keep all of the focus on her bangin' body and the dress.
Another beautiful woman who has a case of Benjamin Button syndrome, Gwen pimped her fashion label L.A.M.B. on the red carpet. She joked with pre-show hosts that she was sewing the magenta ensemble in the car on the way to the show. Its expert tailoring makes it elegant, while the color is perfect for an event like the VMAs.
What better way to promote her new song than with a snakeskin print? Nicki pared the dress with some nude shoes and a more natural hair and makeup look that she has been sporting as of late. This dress' tasteful neckline and long sleeves make the length sexy and not vulgar. A far cry from more costumesque looks of the past, this look was a thumbs up for the Anacondas singer.
Miley kept it simple in a black leather crop top and harem pants. Her understated makeup and simple pixie were very tame compared to her past looks. She did, however, manage to have fun with her accessories, sporting a cute and fun pair of safety pin earrings. This look would be just as appropriate for a night out as it is for a VMA red carpet.
Former Destiny's Child member Michelle Williams turned up to the VMAs to support her good friend Beyonce, who is this year's Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award recipient. Dressed in an elegant and sexy animal print dress, Michelle stunned on the carpet. She too dressed the look down with flowy hair and simple makeup.
Channeling her inner Britney Spears, Katy paid tribute to one of Brit Brit's most famous red carpet looks. Her custom Versace dress was an ode to the patchwork denim look made famous in 2001, though Katy's was more fashion forward. It was embellished with studs and more fitted to her body, which elevated the overall look.
Aussie rapper Iggy Azalea's career has been set ablaze this year. From guest appearances on tracks for Ariana Grande and Rita Ora to her own sizzling single, "Fancy," Iggy is all over the airwaves. She showed up on the red carpet in a custom Versace that was flown in from Italy. The metallic number hugs her famous curves without being trashy. This VMA fashion risk paid off.
'Pretty Little Liars' star and newly minted country singer Lucy Hale got to host the VMA pre-show with Sway this year. Though she graced the red carpet in a leather crop top and a flared, floral midi skirt, it was her hosting outfit that stole the show. The strapless fit and flare mini was cute and sexy in an age appropriate way. She also pulled down her hair and added a belt to make the look more casual.
