Stage Aurora is gearing up for the rest of 2013

Performing Arts Summer Institute (summer camp) June 17 – July19, 2013.  The Annual Stage Aurora Performing Arts Summer Institute provides educational artistic opportunities for youth to engage and experience the performing arts: Theatre, Dance, and Music/Voice.  The fantastic six-week performing arts summer camp ends in a culminating show presenting the participants in "A Night of Entertainment". In past years, this culminating show has presented the youth in excerpts from popular Broadway plays and musicals, to noted movies including: To Kill a Mockingbird, The Wiz, The Color Purple, Fences, A Very Merry JAX Christmas to name a few.  A great place for children to learn and have fun during the summer.CROWNSMay 10–12, 2013 (Mother's Day Weekend)Crowns, a play with music and dance, is adapted from a book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry.  Crowns weaves together a variety of stories from different characters, time periods and perspectives that, when integrated with music and dance, create a tapestry of voices that transcend time and place.  The essential story of Crowns is that of Yolonda, a young African-American girl trying to figure out her identity, her place in the world, and her place in her own culture.The Me Nobody Knows April 12 –14, 2013.  A musical based on the writings of nearly 200 inner –city school youth of diverse backgrounds with music by Gary William Friedman and lyrics by Will Holt.  It debuted off-Broadway in 1970 and then transferred to Broadway, making it one of the earliest rock musicals to play on Broadway, and the first Broadway hit to give voice to the sentiments of inner-city American youth.  It received the Obie Award and the Drama Desk Award for best New Musical, and Five Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical.View the list »

Stage Aurora, a 501 c (3) non-profit organization, launched its main stage of Theatre, Dance, and Music in 2003 under the leadership of Darryl Reuben Hall and began as an opportunity to provide the underserved people of Jacksonville’s North-side community with a venue to grow, share and exhibit their professional skills, creative works of art and culture.

Stage Aurora annually reaches well over 3,000 students from the Jacksonville area through the following programs:

  • A NIGHT OF ENTERTAINMENT July 18, 2013.  Experience the culminating event from a successful summer camp experience.  This production showcases the summer camp participants in a variety of songs, dancing, sketches, and ensemble numbers.  A Night of Entertainment runs for one performance only!  This is a "must-see" this year.
  • 6th Annual Aurora Jacksonville Black Arts Festival July 18 – 21, 2013.  This is an entire weekend celebration featuring arts, performances, productions, and guest artists.  This year’s festival will include a “10-year Anniversary Gala” celebrating the achievements of Stage Aurora; Patric Robinson in “A Tribute to Sam Cooke”, Dee Quaranta’s “Sweet Honey in the Rock”, Oceanus Training Center presenting a Taekwando Exhibition, Jacksonville Consortium of African-American Artists, and “3 Divas and a Guy Named Darryl” showcasing Stage Aurora’s founder Darryl Reuben Hall in an evening of song and dance with Sondra Bonitto, Tarra Jones, and one diva TBA.  Fun, food, and games are to be experienced at the 6th Annual Aurora Jacksonville Black Arts Festival.
  • “Little Shop of Horrors” September 27, 28, 29, & October 4, 5, 6, 2013  (rights pending) is a comedy horror rock musical, by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman, about a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood and flesh.  The musical is based on the low-budget 1960 black comedy film The Little Shop of Horrors, directed by Roger Corman.  The music, composed by Menken in the style of early 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown, includes several well-known tunes, including the title song, “Skid Row (Downtown)”, “Somewhere That's Green”, and "Suddenly, Seymour".
