Spring break locations other than Florida

If you want to enjoy the great outdoors during Spring Break then Moab is the destination for you. Well known for mountain biking and the iconic Slickrock Trail, Moab also offers dozens of other activities.  There is hiking in nearby Arches National Park, white water rafting on the Colorado River, canyoneering, rock climbing and Jeep tours.  The town also has a nice variety of restaurants and art galleries.  Be advised that early spring weather in the high Utah desert can be variable. It might be 30 degrees in the morning and 80 in the afternoon. There may be a week of sunshine or days broken up with clouds and rain. Either way it’s worth the trip to partake in all the outdoor fun.St. Louis is known as the gateway to the west and has the arch to prove it. Visiting the Gateway Arch and the Westward Expansion museum below it are almost enough of a reason to visit this city. Visitors can ascend the inside of the Arch in specially built elevators. Once at the top (elevation 630 feet) small windows allow for spectacular views of the city and the Mississippi River. Another St. Louis icon is the Anheuser-Busch World Headquarters. Free tours are given through the brewery, which was founded in 1852. If baseball is your thing, opening day for the St. Louis Cardinals is April 8 versus the Cincinnati Reds.Located in the mountains of North Carolina, Asheville is an eclectic town that appeals to those looking to get outdoors and also enjoy the artist scene. One of the best known attractions is the Biltmore Estate. Built in 1889 by railroad baron George Vanderbilt, it is the largest personal residence in the United States with 250 rooms. Tours include many (but not all) of the rooms, the 75 acres of formal gardens and the stand alone winery. Asheville is also known as one of the top cities in the country when it comes to craft beer brewing.View the list »

The Smithsonian Institution boasts 10 museum buildings on the National Mall. The Mall is a great place to visit to get a flavor of American history. At one end on the Mall is the Capitol Building, at the other end is the Lincoln Memorial, right in the center is the Washington Monument. One of the newest memorials along the mall is dedicated to Martin Luther King. The annual Cherry Blossom Festival takes place March 20 through April 14. The cherry trees lining the tidal basin will be blooming, creating a pleasant walk to the Jefferson Memorial.

Spring Break is coming over the next couple of weeks. While it may seem like every family in the snow belt descends on Florida, there are several other options available. These locations may not offer beaches, swimsuits or giant cartoon mice, but they are all less than a day’s drive from most of the Midwest and provide many historical and cultural opportunities.
