Smart wins triple crown of Big 12 awards

Okahoma State's Marcus Smart was named Big 12 player of the year, freshman of the year, and first team All big 12 Sunday, March 10, 2013. The Big 12 league office made the announcement after coaches voted.

The regular season ended March 9, and as the freshman looks toward the playoffs, the awards have started coming in. Smart is a finalist for several national awards, including player of the year. He has been named a finalist for the Wooden, Naismith and Cousy national awards.

Smart can be a first-round - and probably a lottery - pick in the NBA draft if he chooses to leave Oklahoma State after this season. Even though many experts say he will bolt for the NBA, he has said he has not yet decided.

Only Michael Beasley and Kevin Durant were named freshman of the year and player of the year the same season before Smart won the honor this year.

Smart was also named All-Big 12 First Team, the Big 12 All-Defensive Team and the Big 12 All-Rookie Team.

"I'm thankful to all my teammates, because if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't even be in a situation to earn these awards. There were a lot of decisions that could've been made, and a lot of good players that (the awards) could've gone to. For all the league coaches to choose me, it's remarkable. There are a lot of great players in the Big 12, and it's an honor to be the one they chose for these awards." Smart said.

Three other Cowboys were also honored by the league coaches. Junior Markel Brown was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team, sophomore Le'Bryan Nash was named to the All-Big 12 Third Team and sophomore Michael Cobbins was named All-Big 12 Honorable Mention. Cobbins joined Smart on the Big 12 All-Defensive Team. Nash was co-freshman of the year last year.
