Overlooking Interstate 70 in Summit County, Colo., Copper Mountain was once just a place to pull off the highway and hammer a lot of vertical. The skiing terrain still offers plenty of excellent fall-line runs, but the base area and resort amenities have grown significantly in the past 15 years.
The resort's purchase by Intrawest in 1997 led to much of the base-area development. Powdr Corp, also the owner of Killington in Vermont and Park City Mountain Resort in Utah, bought Copper Mountain from Intrawest in 2009.
Powdr also now owns the Woodward brand of training facilities catering to park and pipe riders. Woodward at Copper will receive a $500,000 facelift in the coming months.
Celebrating its 40th anniversary this season, Copper Mountain has established itself as a popular spot both for skiers from Denver 80 miles away and for destination travelers.
