The Bible gives a thorough description of what the last days of history will look like. Jesus specifically speaks about the signs that characterize the entire course of the last days; signs that will intensify over time as the end draws near.
Religious deception will be rampant as false prophets and religious compromisers within the church increase and deceive many. Loyalty and total commitment to the truth of God’s Word and Biblical righteousness will be in the minority. There will be many who profess to be Christians, yet accept so-called “new revelation” that is in complete conflict with the revealed Word of God.
There will continue to be an increased focus and involvement in the occult, astrology, witchcraft, spiritism and Satanism. More and more movies, books and TV shows will be produced that deal with the influence of demons and evil spirits.
As the end of the age approaches there will be an unbelievable increase in immorality shamelessness, rebellion against God and a disregard of moral restraint as we move toward the Messianic Age. Sexual perversion, fornication, adultery, pornography, drugs, ungodly music and lustful entertainment will continue to abound. The Bible refers to the days of Noah when “the very imaginations of human hearts were evil continually,” (Genesis 6:5). The Bible also refers to the days Lot when all kinds of sexual perversion permeated society, (Genesis 6:5).
Jesus indicates that true love will be in short supply. Great destruction will continue to come upon the family. Children will rebel against their parents, there will be a lack of the natural feelings of tenderness and love toward each other. This is demonstrated by a mother who rejects her children or worse, kills them; fathers who abandon their families, or children who neglect to care for their aging parents. Parenthood, sacrificial love and care for children will no longer be considered a worthy or dignified task as men and women become lovers of money and pleasure and pursue their own selfish desires.
There will be an increase of wars, famines and earthquakes. The persecution of God’s people will become more severe, causing many to forsake their loyalty to Jesus Christ. Yet, in spite of this intensification of trouble the Gospel will be preached to the entire world and the saved will be those who stand firm in their faith through the distress of the end times. Those who are faithful followers of Jesus Christ will recognize the intensification of all these signs and will know that the day of the Lord’s return is “approaching,” (Hebrews 10:25). The ultimate purpose of the Lord’s return is that believers may forever be with Him.
Listed below are seven signs of the last days and supporting Scripture.
1. Increase of false prophets and religious compromise within the church
Matthew 24: 4-5 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of war and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.”
Matthew 24: 10-11 “At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.”
2. Increase of crime and disregard of God’s law
Matthew 24:12, 37-39 “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of many will grow cold. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.”
II Timothy 3: 1-8 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, and conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people. They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected.
3. Increase of wars, famines and earthquakes
Matthew 24: 6-8 “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.”
Luke 21: 9 “When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”
4. Decrease in love and family affection
Matthew 10: 21, 24:12 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will reel against their parents and have them put to death. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.”
II Timothy 3: 1-3 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good.
5. More severe persecution of God’s people
Matthew 10: 22 “You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.”
John 15: 19-20 “If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.”
John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
6. Those who stand firm will be saved
Matthew 24:13 “But the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.”
Matthew 13: 13 “Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.”
7. The Gospel will be preached to the whole world
Matthew 24:14 “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations and then the end will come.”
Mark 13:10 “And the gospel must first be preached to all nations.”
