What do Too Short, Sly and the Family Stone, Metallica, NOFX, Santana, the Grateful Dead, E-40, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club have in common? They're all from San Francisco or the greater Bay Area. These musicians have helped shape their respective genres and the after effects of those contributions reverberate to this very day. Yet when the subject of top music destinations is discussed, this area tends to get overshadowed by New York City, Los Angeles, Austin, and even Nashville.
If the next few weeks are any indication, that perception may change as the Bay Area will house seven must-attend music festivals. Some will also highlight local food, art, and tech culture. The usual attractions that have put San Francisco on the map, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival and Treasure Island, are happening soon along with five other distinct gatherings. While all participating musicians weren't born or bred here, it's obvious that they still appreciate the unique vitality of this area enough to travel from afar and participate in the movement.
