Thomas Sean Connery was born in Edinburgh, Scotland UK in 1930. His father was a factory worker and his mother a cleaning lady. Coming from such humble roots one would not imagine what he has given to the world. He would join the Royal Navy but was later discharged due to medical problems. He worked as a casket polisher, a nude model, a milkman, and lorry driver. In 1953 would be third runner-up in the Mr. Universe competition.
He would come to a cross roads of sorts where he was offered a pro footballer position or acting. He chose acting and has never looked back. He was observed by Cubby Broccoli when he starred in "Darby O' Gill and the Little People. Cubby had his wife take a look at the film and she loved him not so much for the acting but his sex appeal.
Ian Fleming the writer of the James Bond books didn't want Sean at first for the Bond character. He wanted Cary Grant but later changed his mind. In 1962 Sean Connery first appeared as James Bond in the Film Dr. No. From there he would go on to play James Bond in 6 other Films. This is not a best of list but simply a list of him playing James Bond.
'Dr. No (1962)' - A British Intelligence officer has been killed while on assignment in Jamaica. Agent 007 James Bond (Sean Connery) has been summoned to his superiors office. M (Bernard Lee) as he is simply called is going to bring 007 up to speed on the case and then have him follow up the murder in Jamaica.
Bond was briefed and was leaving the office when he stops to talk to M's secretary Ms. Money Penny (Lois Maxwell) and as she always does when Bond goes on assignment she wishes' him luck.
Bond arrives in Jamaica and is immediately followed by several people. The cabbie tries to kill him but before Bond can get him to talk he takes some cyanide. Bond will eventually meet up with his CIA counterpart Felix Leiter (Jack Lord). The two will eventually figure out that most clues lead to a place called Crab Key. Bond will do some investigating and will stumble upon Honey Ryder (Ursula Andress) looking for some shells.
The two are captured by some men with a mechanical flame thrower and brought back to a Gentleman by the name of Dr. No (Joseph Wiseman). No owns the island and is a member of a group called SPECTRE (Special Executive for Counter-Intelligence Terrorism Revenge and Extortion).
Bond becomes aware of why the British Agent was killed . He had stumbled upon Dr. No's secret and that is that he wants to disrupt the Mercury Space flight.
Will Bond and Honey make it out alive? Can Bond defeat SPECTRE? You must watch the movie. Director Terence Young does an excellent job with the first James Bond films. He brings tradition to the screen for the first time. Enjoy this classic film.
'From Russia With Love (1963)' - SPECTRE (Special Executive for Counter-Intelligence Terrorism Revenge and Extortion) is still somewhat upset with the death of Dr. No at the hands of British Agent 007 James Bond (Sean Connery). Ms. Moneypenny (Lois Maxwell) was told by department head M (Bernard Lee) to have Bond come into for a conference. M informed Bond of the possibility of acquiring a Lektor Decoding device. British Intelligence wanted one desperately. M also informed Bond of the possibility that SPECTRE is going to try and kill him in retaliation for Dr. NO. Bond said he was already aware.
Bond was off to Istanbul fully aware that this could be a trap. He would meet up with Kerim Bey (Pedro Armendariz) Bond's counterpart in Istanbul.
Before Bond had left London he had been in touch with Q (Desmond Llewelyn) head of the technical branch and was given some toys that would prove helpful.
Bond would arrive in Istanbul and was brought up to speed about the Lektor. Bond would meet Tatiana Romanov (Daniel Bianchi) a worker in the embassy and she would help him get it out. What Bond didn't know was that she actually was a counter spy. Romanov would finally come over to Bond's side with a little sweet persuasion. Also SPECTRE had sent others to help kill Bond. Rosa Klebb (Lotte Lenya) and a man simply known as Grant (Robert Shaw) would try and kill the pair.
This would be the second movie in the series of Bond films and the second Directed by Terrence Young. You can see the direction the films were taking and everybody was eating it up. James Bond was here to stay. Enjoy.
'Goldfinger (1964)' - British Secret Agent 007 James Bond (Sean Connery) is following Auric Goldfinger (Gert Frobe) a suspected member of SPECTRE (Special Executive for Counter-Intelligence Terrorism Revenge and Extortion). While working with the CIA in Miami Florida bond is trying to find out what Goldfinger is up to. Felix Leiter (CeC Linder) working with Bond has been covering up everything that Goldfinger was doing.
Bond had been with a young lady for some enjoyable 007 entertainment but when Bond came back she was painted in Gold. This peaked 007's interest and followed Goldfinger to Scotland. There he would play a round of Golf with Bond and lose. Goldfinger would inform Bond that he was aware of Bond's surveillance and that he didn't expect to see him again. He would have his manservant Oddjob (Harold Sakata) decapitate a statue with his hat. Impressive to say the least but does not deter Bond from following Goldfinger back to the states. Kentucky is where they were headed.
Before he would leave for the states again Bond would report to M (Bernard Lee) about what he had found out. Q (Desmond Llewelyn) would give Bond his gadgets that would help him with his mission. Miss Moneypenny (Lois Maxwell) would wish James good luck.
It would be outside Fort Knox, Kentucky at Goldfinger's horse farm that Bond would find out about "Operation Grand Slam".
Bond would find comfort of course with another beautiful woman and that would be Pussy Galore (Honor Blackman), Goldfinger's private pilot.
Director Guy Hamilton would direct one of the earlier Bond's best movie. This Bond made the series a house hold name. Enjoy.
'Thunderball (1965)' - British Secret Agent 007 James Bond (Sean Connery) is off for some rest and relaxation. You know massage's, steam bath's, exercise and a good old fashioned diet. Secret agents can't be fat you know. While at the spa he see's something going on but he can't quite figure it out until it is too late. You see SPECTRE was having a pilot replaced by another man. The pilot was with NATO Command and was going to carrying two atomic weapon's. SPECTRE felt that they could blackmail if they had them in their hands.
Bond would go back to M (Bernard Lee) and report his observations and that is when they got the news that the plane had gone down and that the weapons were gone. Q ( Desmond Llewelyn) will have to come up with some good gadgets if Bond is going to succeed and get those bombs back. Even Ms. Moneypenny (Lois Maxwell) and her wish to James about being safe may come into question. We are dealing with Nuclear Weapons this time.
James is headed into CIA territory this time so he will be getting help from his friend Felix Leiter (Rik Van Nutter).
The man Bond will be going after is named Largo (Adolfo Celi) SPECTRE'S man in the United States. Bond is heading for the Keys of Florida.
Of course there will be a beautiful woman with Largo and that will be Bonds in. Her name is Domino (Claudine Auger). She is related to the original pilot that Bond found dead at the spa. It was her brother and when she finds out what Largo has done all Bond has to do is ask for her help.
Director Terrence Young is back for this movie and it is very entertaining. It's just by now Bond is becoming a little see through. We know what is going to happen in the movie but we still want to watch because it's James Bond. Enjoy.
'You Only Live Twice (1967)' - British Secret Agent 007 James Bond (Sean Connery) must die. Okay, I'm jumping way ahead of the game. The Americans and the Russians are losing space capsules and each other is thinking the other is doing it. There has been action coming from a Japanese Island and Bond must go in and see what is going on. M (Bernard Lee) orders Bond to be killed and the world is to know about it. Miss Money penny (Lois Maxwell) is all torn up when she sees Bond come aboard a British Naval vessel. In other words she is faking it. Bond is not dead but to infiltrate this little village he is going to have to undergo a little surgery to make him look Japanese. It will be up to Tiger Tanaka (Tetsuro Tanba) to get Bond into the village. He has a girl who has agreed to marry Bond and make it look like he is just another fisherman. The bride to be I named Aki (Akiko Wakabayashi).
The wedding ceremony is very nice and the bride was very beautiful. The next day the young couple were out at work fishing. There was an area that Aki says people don't go near of course that catches Bond's interest.
Later that night with Aki, Bond goes and searches one of the volcanoes that is in the area. Funny thing what is supposed to be a crater with water in it just had a helicopter come out of it. Bond finds out the crater is metal. The next night he and some of Tanaka's men come back to the crater and attempt to break into it.
Bond will later learn that it is Blofeld (Donald Pleasence) who is behind the capturing of the space capsules. Thus SPECTRE is at it again.
Bond is always trying to put those guys out of action but they always seem to come back again and again.
Director Lewis Gilbert has an extremely talented cast and with Ian Fleming's writing behind the story it makes for good entertainment. Enjoy.
'Diamonds Are Forever (1971)' - British Secret Agent 007 is on the trail of some diamonds. M (Bernard Lee) has sent Bond to Amsterdam on the heels of a smuggling ring that is moving a lot of diamonds. Bond meets up with part of the delivery ring and her name is Tiffany Case (Jill St. John). Bond and Tiffany Case travel to Las Vegas with the diamonds stuck nicely away in a casket.
What Bond doesn't know is that there are men, a Mr. Wint (Bruce Glover) and a Mr. Kidd (Putter Smith) who have been sent to kill anyone who comes into contact with the diamonds.
Once in the States Bond is able to contact Felix Leiter (Norman Burton) for any help he may need. As Bond gets closer to the diamonds he sees that everything is not the way it should be. For instance, Bond feels that a Willard Whyte (Jimmy Dean) is involved in all this diamond conspiracy but in reality it is no other than his friend Blofeld (Charles Gray).
You see Blofeld has taken over Whyte's company and has kidnapped him . Bond finds Whyte and then goes after Blofeld.
This movie is typical Bond and it is good but it could have been better. Director Guy Hamilton does a nice job with the cast and script but this Bond has something that is missing. Sean Connery was just not himself with this performance. He would leave playing Bond for some 12 years, he would say that he was done with Bond after this movie. Don't worry Never say Never.
'Never Say Never Again (1983)' - British Secret Agent 007 James Bond (Sean Connery) has been in retirement. M (Edward Fox) has called Bond back to service because of Maximilian Largo (Klaus Maria Brandauer) and the fact that he has acquired some Nuclear Missiles. Miss Moneypenny (Pamela Salem) is delighted to see James for it has been some time since the last mission.
Bond meets up with Largo and they exchange pleasantries as enemies would. Bond sees another beauty and this time it is Domino Petachi (Kim Basinger). Domino is a mistress to Largo. It is through Domino that Bond will be able to make his move on Largo. Bond is able to tell Domino that it was Largo who had her brother killed when he was part of the team that stole the missiles.
Bond has to ask the CIA for a little help with this one. So once again Felix Leiter (Bernie Casey) comes to Bond's aid.
Bond at one point has to fight a bodyguard of Largo and that is Fatima Blush (Barbara Carrera). He does win but not by much.
Okay, now let's talk real about this movie. Sean Connery didn't want to do it. When he did say yes it was because of the amount of money they were going to give him. Connery was getting up in years and some of the stunts you know he had either the hardest time doing them or they were done by a double. The whole premise of this storyline is a rip off of the movie Thunderball. What's even funnier is they got away with it. This is Connery at his worst. This movie should never have been made and it didn't do anything for Connery's career. Director Irvin Kershner signed on for this movie but he must not have known of all the crap it involved. If he did he's an idiot. It's Bond but it is not his best.
Sean Connery has been voted the sexiest, the man of the century, best actor, and many more. His bread and butter was James Bond. He would later have a hard time with the role as he felt he was becoming type cast. He would come back for the seventh film in the Bond Series only if they matched his asking price. Sean Connery has given us many years of beautiful movies and entertainment. He now lives in the Caribbean with his 2nd wife Micheline. It all started though when he uttered the words Bond, James Bond.
