San Jose Sharks take actions affecting several players in 2013-14

CSN Bay Area Insider Kevin Kurz chronicled several moves the San Jose Sharks made on Tuesday, July 2: Doug Wilson traded a restricted free agent (RFA) forward, extended qualifying offers to two more and signed two more.

Goalie Thomas Heemskerk, forward Tommy Grant and Justin Sefton on the blue line were not tendered an offer, effectively ending their relationship with the team. The only reason the Sharks would cede their rights to a prospect is if they were no longer felt they were NHL material.

The list of individual moves they did make deserves further examination. Signings have a tendency to have a ripple effect, affecting others at the position and the salary cap space left to sign more.

Wilson has now gone a long way to determining who will be on their roster for the 2013-14 season and shaped their prospect pool. In addition to those released, six players were affected by Tuesday's moves.
