'Sage of Sages' Punxsutawney Phil predicts an early spring in Gobblers Knob

That famous furry rodent, Punxsutawney Phil was out of his burrow at daybreak this morning in Gobbler’s Knob Penn., and there was no way he could have cast a shadow -- so, as the folklore has it, spring is destined to arrive early this year. Those of us in North Texas have had a taste of that delightful weather; but those in more northern latitudes are still stuck in the deepfreeze.

But, today there is renewed hope, at least in some quarters, that the end of winter is within reach. It's an early year for other things, as well -- Mardi Gras, coming in just 10 days, and Easter after that. So, it would seem fitting that Mother Nature might see fit to grace this globe with an early warming also.

However, Punxsutawney Phil is traditionally wrong more than he is right; so, the best course might be simply to enjoy the fun of this particular celebration which has been going on in a sleepy little town in Pennsylvania since 1887. But, be sure to keep those boots and fleece-lined parkas handy, just in case.
