After the Danes bought the island in 1733, the, then govenor, built his home on the estate.  He turned the Greathouse into a sugar factory with a sugar mill, which is still standing. Christiansted is one of two towns located between the busy seaport and the green hillside, and was the capital of the Danish West Indies from 1755 to 1871. The one-square mile town is known for it's historic yellow buildings, it's Danish architecture, cobblestone streets, old churches and the old fort "Christiansvaen as well as hotels, restaurants and places to visit.
