State Senator Luz Robles-D, Salt Lake City announced Friday she plans to challenge first term Representative Chris Stewart-R for the District 2 seat in the US House of Representatives next year. She will officially launch her campaign on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the State Capitol. The public is invited.
While Stewart easily won his first term with 62 percent of the vote over former state Representative Jay Seegmiller-D, Robles has strong support within urban areas of the district. She said, “If you look at the district, there are pockets in the district that will align with someone like me and my background and what I’m doing.” Areas included in the district that could favor Robles include the Avenues, Sugarhouse and Northwest Salt Lake City.
The district also includes much of western and southern Utah which is heavily conservative, and it is estimated republicans have an 18 percent advantage. Robles hopes to encourage and inspire people who haven’t voted in the past to register, vote, and make a difference. She maintains her number one goal is to get Washington working for the people. Stewart plans to focus on “a smaller, more responsive federal government,” according to Ryan McCoy, Stewart’s campaign manager.
Stewart was welcomed by a less than supportive crowd when he attended a packed meeting of the Salt Lake City Avenues Council on September 4. He faced tough questions about his condemnation of the Affordable Care Act, immigration reform, and his questioning the science behind global warming.
Salt Lake City - the only liberal stronghold in the state - was divided by the Republican dominated legislature’s redistricting process into sections leaving Utah Democrats virtually powerless. The seat representing the former district was held by Jim Matheson-D since 2001. Following redistricting, he ran for office in the newly created fourth district where he barely beat challenger Mia Love by 768 votes. Love is already planning a rematch next year.
