Recently my cousin in Iowa posted some Facebook photos as he and his wife were out riding their bikes on the Raccoon River Vally Trail (RRVT) in west central Iowa. They are based in Jefferson, at the north end of this trail. The excellent rail website describes it as "One of America's Best Recreational Trails" and then goes on to share information that justifies the claim. I hope you go see for yourself. The east edge of the RRVT, on the west edge of Des Moines, IA, is an easy day drive from Springfield, MO.
The RRVT runs north and west of Des Moines, is an 89-mile-long paved trail along the branches of the beautiful Raccoon River through Green, Guthrie and Dallas Counties. It is said to be one of longest paved trails in the United States. Now, in addition, it is one that has the longest interior loop on a trail in the nation at 72 miles. See the downloadable pdf map of the trail and the 14 trailheads in small towns through out the region. Also read about the connections to other trails in the state.
