On Friday afternoon, about 40 advocates of reproductive rights from across Ohio rallied at the Statehouse to protest House Bill 59, the state budget bill that redirects funds from Planned Parenthood to faith-based pregnancy crisis centers, suspends funding for rape crisis centers that advise patients on abortion, and requires women seeking an abortion to undergo a trans-abdominal ultrasound.
"The coat hanger is a very dark symbol," said organizer Haley Swenson. "It represents what we don't want to go back to. We want to share with Governor Kasich just how serious this matter is, how serious we are about stopping this mistake."
Several women shared their stories out loud. After the rally, a delegation delivered the written stories, along with the coat hangers, to the governor's office in the Riffe Center. An aide for Governor Kasich received the stories and coat hangers.
