The Kansas City Renaissance Festival opens Saturday Aug. 31 at the festival grounds in Bonner Springs, Kan. The festival runs through Columbus Day, Oct. 14. The festival is open weekends and Labor Day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Columbus Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The opening weekend includes a Tattoo Competition, Best Beard Competition and a Fairy House Competition.
Santa Cali Gon 2013 begins on Thursday Aug. 29 with a carnival. This is the 41st year of the annual festival which runs through Labor Day. The carnival will run daily through the festival. Patrons can enjoy arts, crafts, vendors, food and drink. Free concerts begin on Friday with Delisa Dawn and Route 66 at 7:30 p.m., followed by Joe Diffie at 9 p.m. The concert series runs throughout the festival with the last show at 3 p.m. on Labor Day.
Other events Labor Day Weekend include: Irish Fest at Crown Center, Kansas City Wine Opener at Union Station, Sporting Kansas City vs. Colorado, The Kansas City Royals vs. Seattle and Bike 4 the Brian at the Johnson County Mental Health Center.

- Kansas City Repertory Theatre: Copaken Stage, “The Tallest Tree in the Forest”, closes Sept. 28.
- Slightly Off Broadway Theater: Excelsior Springs, Mo., “Laughter on the 23rd Floor”, closes Aug. 31.
