Carnival Cruise Line bills its fleet as the Fun Ships, and I was eager to see if that tag line would hold true when I took my first-ever Carnival cruise on the Sunshine. It was a quick two day media trip, so I really didn't know how much fun could be packed into such a short time span. Little did I know that the excitement would start before I even boarded the ship and continue on through the very end.
I've cruised on Disney ships nearly 90 times, so I'm fussy about the quality of my cruising experience and the entertainment. I have to say that Carnival did a great job, although some of their offerings are definitely more on the "party" side of the spectrum. I found that I really enjoyed that, as you'll see from the photos of some random fun moments from throughout the cruise.
Giant Towel Animal
Before I even boarded the Carnival Sunshine, I met this giant towel animal, so of course I had to stop for a photo. He's a really fun character, and you'll see his smaller kin at some point during your voyage.
Towel Animal Zoo
You'll get towel animals in your stateroom, but you'll also see this whimsical zoo of towel animals up on the pool deck if you're out and about early. The deck chairs all get taken over by a variety of towel critters.
Although Carnival has an adult atmosphere, that doesn't mean the Carnival Sunshine isn't a great place for kids. They have loads of activities, like a ropes course and water slides, and of course swimming pools are kid magnets.
Want some quieter pool time or a place to kick back and relax? Here's a small part of the adult area, which extends up for multiple decks. Yes, that's a hammock, and there are covered loungers too.
Like all Carnival ships, the Sunshine has a casino with all the standard games. However, this one intrigued me because I just love claw games. Instead of fuzzy stuffed animals, you can win cold, hard cash.
Wild Water Slides
The water slides are pretty wild, so they're great for both kids and adults. Be prepared for speed! It's like being at a water park, but with the added bonus of being out in the middle of the ocean.
Dining Room Performances
I'm used to performances by the dining room servers, especially on the last night of a cruise, but Carnival topped anything I've ever seen. Yes, they're really up on the tables. Their grand finale as "What Does the Fox Say." which had everyone in stitches.
There's always something going on on the Carnival Sunshine, and on the last night of my cruise, it culminated in a big atrium party. Yes, that's Cruise Director Jaime up on the bar. You can see that the crowd extends up several decks. They're all getting in the spirit with YMCA.
Mardi Gras Beads
The atrium party also featured lots of Mardi Gras beads getting tossed out into the crowd. No matter which deck you were on, you had a good chance of nabbing some for yourself.
