Protect your perfect pucker

Valentine's day is not the only time to think of romance and date night. Better start preparing those puckers now! As with any other part of our bodies, our lips are not exempt from dry, dead skin cells. No one wants to kiss crusty lips, so consider exfoliating them.

Incorporating a lip scrub into your lip and skin care routine once to twice weekly can help soften the skin and restore the natural glow that is buried under dead skin cells. People rarely consider exfoliating lips, because they do not usually think of that area as getting dried, cracked, and crusty as would elbows, knees, and heels.

Lip scrubs are a dime a dozen, which is why you need to find the one that is the best for you. Typical lip scrubs contain oils, honey, and sugar. Some contain petrolatum, but three dermatologists have told this author to steer away from petroleum jelly. Honey is added to moisturize lips and make them feels smooth. Oils penetrate the lips to soften them. Sugar acts as an exfoliant.

Angeline's Addiction offers two types of basic lip scrubs but customizes them per client. One type contains oils and sugars. The other contains butters, oils, and sugars. Both types contain essential oils and vitamin e as natural preservatives and can also be used as face and body scrubs.

Variants of both types may contain coffee, lavender buds, fruit juices, green tea, and/or fruit extracts. Schedule an appointment with the store to sample the products. Free samples are shipped / delivered with each order. Check back for specials as they sometimes offer free makeovers and head shot sessions.

Step 2:

Once you have found a lip scrub that have ingredients to suit you, read the directions carefully as some require refrigeration.

Use a spatula, spoon, or other such item to scoop a little product out of the jar.  By not placing your fingers directly into the container, you are decreasing the likelihood of introducing contaminants to the product.

Step 3:

After you have removed some product, place the product onto your finger tip then massage briskly onto lips.  The coarseness of the sugar or other exfoliant will loosen the dead skin cells.

Step 4:

Wipe excess product from lips and remove any remaining sugar particles.  After you have cleaned the sugar off of your lips, apply lip balm to moisturize lips.  This step is important to replenish moisture.
