The 85th Academy Awards were held on Feb. 24, 2013 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Those who excel in the film industry receive a statue known as the Oscar. You might be surprised to know that some of the most popular and top paid celebrities have never received an Oscar.

The Academy Awards are presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for excellence in the film industry, including directors, actors, musicians, and writers.

The formal ceremony at which the awards are presented is one of the most prominent film award ceremonies in the world.

It is also the oldest award ceremony in the media and watched by billions all over the world. People watch it for the fashions and music just as much as they watch it to see who will take home the Oscar.

Some of our favorite celebrities go home with an Oscar. However, some celebrities have been nominated numerous times; yet, they have never received the coveted statue.

He has been nominated for top awards many times. He has been listed in the 2012 Guinness Book of World Records as the highest paid actor with $75 million. He has never won an Oscar. 
  • Julianne Moore, 52, has had four nominations in five years. In 2003, she was nominated for her roles in two movies: "Far From Heaven," and "The Hours." In 2000 she was nominated for her role in "The End Of The Affair;" and in 1998 she was nominated for her role in "Boogie Nights." However, Moore has never won an Oscar. 
  • Richard Gere, 63, starred in several hit films including An Officer and a Gentleman, Pretty Woman, Primal Fear, and Chicago, for which he won a Golden Globe Award as Best Actor, as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the Best Cast, but never won an Oscar.   
  • Sijourney Weaver, 63, made it into the history books, but not for an Oscar after being nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress in 1989.  She didn't receive an Oscar for either one. In fact, she has never received an Oscar.Her most famous Oscar miss was "Gorillas in the Mist' in 1989. 
  • Leonardo DiCaprio, 38, has been nominated for the Golden Globe Award nine times as an actor, and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his performance in The Aviator (2004). DiCaprio's movies are usually a hit. He has had an Oscar  nomination, but he has never received an the golden statue.  
  • Will Smith, 44, has been called the most powerful actor in Hollywood. Smith has been nominated for four Golden Globe Awards, two Academy Awards, and has won four Grammy Awards.  Fourteen of the nineteen fiction films he has acted in have accumulated worldwide gross earnings of over $100 million, and four took in over $500 million in global box office receipts. As of 2011, his films have grossed $5.7 billion in global box office.  He has never won an Oscar.
