PlayStation 4: The rumors so far

 In a post on his website, creative director of “The Last Guardian”, Fumito Ueda told fans that information on the game would be coming soon, and to “keep an eye out”, but that the timing of the announcement would be ultimately up to Sony.“While it’s been a long time coming, THE LAST GUARDIAN remains under my creative supervision and is still in development by an incredibly talented team.I should also mention that details regarding THE LAST GUARDIAN's release is solely decided by Sony Computer Entertainment, not myself. Please keep an eye out for their official announcement.”His statements have led some to believe that the game might be announced as a PS4 title at Sony’s event tonight. According to a report posted by VGLeaks, The PlayStation 4 (code named “Orbis”) may come with a device called “Dual Camera” built in.“Dual Camera” appears to be an HD evolution of the "Eyetoy" instead of a "Kinect" device, based on the features offered right now.It contains a pair of wide-angle cameras. Each camera offers a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels (720p).Sound is processed by a 4 microphone array working at 48 KHz.The device can perform some non-gaming tasks such as:Recognize the user and log in the systemVideo chatIt will also reportedly track hand and body motion, but it is unknown at this point if it will include body tracking like Microsoft’s "Kinect". According to a report published by the Wall Street Journal, the PlayStation 4 will be able to stream PlayStation 3 games over the Internet. These pictures line up with early reports that suggested that the controller would have a touchpad in the center of it. In the picture, there’s a space where a touchpad might be, but it could also be a very small touchscreen that is just turned off.Also seen in the images, is a light on the top that is similar to the light on the PlayStation 3’s “Move” controller. This suggests that the next generation of PlayStation Move will be integrated into the console.

Over the past few weeks, there have been a number of rumors regarding Sony’s new system, presumably titled the PlayStation 4. Yesterday, Feb. 19, 2013, there were a few last minute reports on the system before tonight’s big reveal. A fairly reliable source told Kotaku that there will be two models of the PlayStation 4 system, priced $429 and $529, but those prices are subject to change. They also reported that the system would be available in November.

According to Kotaku’s source, a source that leaked the code names of both Sony and Microsoft’s new consoles, the system’s price isn’t going to be discussed at the event tonight. Obviously this information will be either confirmed or denied in a few short hours, but it’s interesting to say the least.

There was also a report that consumers will be able to control the PS4 using their smartphones, similar to Microsoft’s Xbox Smart Glass app. This would add another layer to Sony’s strategy to completely immerse the user in the PlayStation experience.

  •  “Destiny”, the new game from Bungie, was announced only for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, but according to some sleuths over at Gamnesia on Feb. 19, 2013, the source code for the pre-order page on the game’s official website list other, unannounced platforms.Listed in the source code are the PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox, Xbox 720, Wii U, and PlayStation Vita. The most likely platforms to receive the game are the four systems from Sony and Microsoft, and possibly the PC. It seems unlikely that the game will release for the Wii U or the PlayStation Vita. But then again, stranger things have happened. If it does release on the PlayStation Vita, perhaps it’ll support cross play with the PS3 or the PS4.
