In planning a hiking trip, good information is important to the safety, enjoyment and convenience of your experience. Fortunately, information about many trails is available online and in guidebooks. While short hikes in local parks or city trails can usually be done spontaneously, most longer trips are best researched beforehand. Information such as the distance, elevation gain, best season, permits required and recommended gear - as well as tips from people who have already been there - are all useful and worth seeking out. While no hike is guaranteed to be free of disappointment, setbacks or even danger, a little bit of planning can go a long way in making an adventure successful.
