It’s springtime in America and across the country schools and community groups are providing challenging and entertaining events and activities for its students and residents to get involve as participants or spectators in keeping abreast of the ever evolving cultures in the United States.
Focusing in on Palm Beach County School District, a group of schools have collaborated to present an evening of entertainment full of talent, enchantment and delight. Dance students throughout the county will take center stage in a tribute concert on April 6, 2013 at the Bak Mainstage Theatre. U. B. Kinsey/Palmview Elementary, Plumosa Elementary, Bak Middle of the Arts, Okeeheelee Middle, Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts, Boynton Beach High and Wellington High will join forces to present “Young Dancers in Concert.”
The concert is in honor of Joan Miller for her contributions over the last 50 years to dance in Palm Beach County. Tickets are $5 and are available at seatyourself.biz/bakdance. Proceeds benefit dance in the public schools.
When it comes to challenging achievements in speech and debating competitions, Palm Beach County schools are not just winners, but champions among their peers in other Florida schools and schools across the USA.
The Suncoast High School Debate Team is continuing its winning tradition. “The Suncoast Debate Team is having a terrific year,” said Suncoast Speech and Debate coach Traci Lowe. The team competed at the University of Pennsylvania Liberty Bell Classic in February and dominated in Student Congress. Vishal Harpalani placed 1st, Kayla Morton was 3rd, Luke Longhofer was 4th, Michael Beer was 5th and Jacob Beer was 6th. Jessie Wang also made her team proud by placing 5th in Oral Interpretation.
On March 9, they continued their successful year by qualifying twelve students to the 2013 National Catholic Forensic League National Tournament that will be held in Philadelphia during Memorial Day weekend. The students placed in various events where they had to debate a monthly resolution, interpret poetry, write an original speech on a social issue or debate legislation. Kayla Morton, Michael Beer and Vishal Harpalani qualified in Student Congress, Liam Fineman in Dramatic Performance, Imani Murph and Emily Bocchino in Original Oratory, Gerald Djajaputra in Extemporaneous Speaking, Cyrille Unico and Ali Younis in Oral Interpretation, Brian Callahan and Shamshad Ali in Public Forum Debate and Anugya Sood in Lincoln Douglas Debate.
Ms. Lowe said, “The Suncoast family is also proud that the team will continue to represent Palm Beach County in Alabama at the National Forensic League National Tournament in June.”
Continuing on with perfection in speech and debating in the Palm Beach County School District, we find Royal Palm Beach High’s speech and debate teams are heading to Nationals. The Royal Palm Beach High School‘s speech and debate team competed in the National Forensic League Panther District Finals that took place at Royal Palm Beach High School. This tournament qualifies the top three in each event to the NFL National Championship Tournament Competition which takes place this year in Birmingham, AL.
The tournament features the top competitors from Palm Beach, Martin, Brevard and Orange counties. Royal Palm Beach High School qualified for nationals in dramatic interpretation and international extemporaneous speaking categories.
“I am beyond proud of how my students performed, said Mr. Eric Jeraci, the Director of Forensics at RPBHS. Not only did I have three students that qualified for nationals, but we also had students in five different finals rounds. The team set another milestone, making us yet again one of the top teams in the nation.”
Anthony Nadeau and Delisa Stephenson qualified in Dramatic Interpretation taking 1st and 2nd Place and Timothy Deaver qualified in International Extemporaneous Speaking taking 1st place. The following students were also recognized: Gabriella Garza and Nikita Grant (2nd Alternates in Duo Interpretation) and Hannah Locop (2nd Alternate in Original Oratory).
Palm Beach County is the place to observe and acknowledge a demonstration of talent and achievement whether in the arts or academics. Salute to all for their accomplishments of success.
