This year's Oscars was considered to be special. For the first time in history, producers gave the show a theme- focusing on music in film and honoring musicals. In an effort to keep the show sounding "youthful," they also refrained from calling the show "The 85th Annual Academy Awards," sticking instead with simply "The Oscars."
And while the gowns and tuxes worn by the stars on the red carpet will be analyzed over and over again by TV shows and magazines everywhere, not so much attention is paid to the hairstyles and makeup worn by the celebrities. And the hair and makeup trends are considered by many to be just as- or more- important, and even more telling of real-life trends to come.
Possibly the most popular hairstyle at this year's Oscars was the retro-style, glamorous waves reminiscent of Lana Turner and other 40s-era beauties. Reese Witherspoon's hair was perfectly coiffed into shiny, loose waves worn to one side. Jessica Chastain's red locks were also curled and kept super-glam.
On the flip side of that is the stick-straight hair worn by the likes of Sandra Bullock, who let her dress do the talking by keeping her hairstyle simple. It was straight and shiny, parted to one side with a large, diamond-encrusted accessory over one ear.
Every aspect of Charlize Theron's look was gorgeous- from her geometric-cut white gown to her short hairstyle. Though she cut her hair a while back for a film role, Theron has kept it very short and has lightened it to blonde. It's not an easy style to pull off, but she was certainly working it.
As for updos, Amanda Seyfried's comes to mind. Her hair was styled into an interesting, twisted bun that almost resembled a fishtail braid, with pieces pulled far to each side of the style. It was kept modern and fresh with some extra volume, curl and texture toward the front and top. Jennifer Lawrence also wore a low-set updo. Her style was more sleek, which made sense considering her gown and accessories.
