The National Football League has stars and stars-in-waiting; the position of quarterback is the glamor job in the NFL and the backups know it. Each team usually carries three quarterbacks on the regular season roster because you can't be lacking in that important position. Quarterbacks hang around awhile, especially the bench riders. The thrill of being given the starting job --if only for a few games-- keeps guys hanging around into their late 30s. And, of course, it's hard to get injured when you don't play much on Sunday. It's a skill position, but it doesn't require fleet of foot players. Size is, arguably, more important in backups than speed as one can observe on a Fall Sunday viewing the games.
The list I prepared for you today is full of surprises because I bet a lot of you don't know who your favorite team's backup quarterback is. I was surprised to find out who my Green Bay Packers have competing for the honor to backup Aaron Rodgers. Occasionally star quarterbacks become backups to even bigger stars.
Here's a list of some NFL backup quarterbacks in 2013. I found them playing in this Summer's NFL preseason games. Check it out.
