New teacher assessment tool for teacher candidates

The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) has introduced a new teacher assessment tool and hopes it will grow in popularity.

The edTPA (Teacher Performance Assessment) is an assessment "process" that helps to determine a teacher candidate's readiness to enter a classroom. While it isn't a magic bullet, it is a tool that will help teacher candidates think about the types of things they will encounter upon graduation. The tool, which was developed at Stanford University, assesses five dimensions of teaching: planning, instruction, assessment, analysis of teaching, and academic language.

New York State has already formally adopted the edTPA. Teacher candidates applying for initial certification on or after May 1, 2014 must take and pass the assessment. Other states are considering adoption for licensing as well as teacher preparation programs.

The edTPA will become available nationally in the 2013-2014 school year. It is the hope of AACTE that teacher assessment tools will become a prominent feature of teacher preparation programs across the country.
