New cast could be a dream for ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in 2013

Michael Strahan is an athlete, a likeable TV host and a fun-loving character - all wrapped into one package. Plus, he’s got all the right moves, as evidenced on “Live with Kelly & Michael.” Since being named Ripa’s co-host, “Live’s” ratings have soared to new heights, proving Strahan has a huge fan base. This could bode very well for him on “Dancing with the Stars.” Spirited Peta Mergatroyd, who won season 14 with Donald Driver, would be a great partner for Michael.John Travolta’s wife is incredibly personable and friendly with Kirstie Alley, who did very well on “Dancing with the Stars.” Preston was often spotted in the audience cheering on her good buddy. With personal dance lessons from Travolta and Kirstie’s advice, Preston would simply shine on “DWTS.” Plus, she could dash in and out of L.A. on John’s private jet. The all-star season of “Dancing with the Stars” was a ratings disappointment for ABC and the numbers have been on the decline. Longtime fans complain that the “stars” are not really stars at all, but reality celebrities that pack no true star power. A new dream cast could be just the ticket to a blockbuster season and ratings bonanza for “DWTS” in 2013.

“Dancing with the Stars” debuted in the summer of 2005, when Kelly Monaco was crowned the first mirror ball champion of the dance floor. The highest scoring celebrities to date are Kristi Yamaguchi from season 6, Gilles Marini from season 8, Melissa Rycroft and Shawn Johnson from season 15, and Katherine Jenkins from season 14. Athletes usually do very well and have won six seasons and placed second four times for a collective success rate of 36%. To date, many consider Kenny Mayne as the worst celebrity to ever compete on “DWTS.”

So, which stars could turn the ship around and make “Dancing with the Stars” a huge hit in 2013? To re-vamp itself, the show needs to cast true celebrities that have the right moves, but little or no ballroom training. “Dancing with the Stars” premieres on March 16 on ABC and the new cast will be announced live on on “Good Morning America” on Tuesday, Feb. 26.

Once she gets her strength back, Robin could tear it up on the dance floor and she’s already proven that she’s a great fighter. Because of his supportive coaching methods, Tony Dovolani would be a great partner for Roberts.
  • Josh Duhamel is incredibly good-looking and married to Fergie from The Black Eyed Peas, so he could be a double threat on “Dancing with the Stars.” Plus, he co-starred with Julianne Hough, a past “DWTS” dance pro, in the movie “Safe Haven.” They had great on-screen chemistry, so Julianne Hough would have to return to the ballroom to be Josh’s partner on “Dancing with the Stars.”
  • She’s not returning to “America’s Got Talent,” so Sharon Osbourne could have some extra time on her hands. Daughter Kelly Osbourne did very well on “DWTS” in 2009 when she competed with partner Louis van Amstel. In fact, she transformed into a swan and landed in the finals. Sharon Osbourne could repeat Kelly’s success, especially if partnered with Louis. Sharon has already overcome colon cancer and Ozzie’s various addictions, so she could easily rise to a new challenge and shine on “Dancing with the Stars.”
  • He’s already proven that he competes to win. Adam Lambert made a huge impression when he competed on season eight of “American Idol” in 2009. Since then, Lambert has rocketed to success and has a huge fan base. He’d be perfect for “Dancing with the Stars” because of his theatrical training and love for flamboyant costumes. Plus, Adam is known for his meticulous attention to detail, so he’d most certainly be able to remember all of the dance steps. Spunky Lacey Schwimmer, who is often paired with the youngest competitors, would be the perfect partner for Adam.
  • Now that Hillary has resigned her post as Secretary of State, Bill Clinton may be looking for his turn in the spotlight. After surviving the Monica Lewinsky media storm, a turn on “Dancing with the Stars” would be a walk in the park. Even at 66, the former president still exudes charm, so he could definitely pull in female voters. Plus, dance pro Cheryl Burke said just recently that Clinton would be her dream partner. If anyone can turn out a winner, it’s 2-time champ Burke. They would make a great team on “DWTS.”
  • The “SNL” comedienne proved that she could wow a live audience when she co-hosted the Golden Globe Awards with Amy Poehler in 2013. She’s great at ad-libbing and could easily improvise if she forgot a few dance steps. Plus, she would bring a light-hearted and lively spirit to the ballroom. If she ever does choose to compete on “DWTS,” she should be paired with the bad boy of the ballroom, Maks. Tina’s “go with the flow” attitude would be the perfect match to Maks’s demanding training methods.
  • Since Regis Philbin retired from “Live” in 2011, fans  have been desperate to see his face on TV again. He holds the Guinness World Record for the most time spent in front of a TV camera and can captivate an audience. Regis has reportedly been asked to compete on “DWTS” many times, but always turned down the offer due to scheduling conflicts. Now that he has the time to practice, Philbin should definitely consider lacing up his dance shoes. If he ever does compete, he should be partnered with champ Kym Johnson, who won seasons 9 and 12 with Donny Osmond and Hines Ward.
