On Dec. 4, NBC aired its annual TV special called “Christmas In Rockefeller Center” to commemorate the lighting of the Great Tree and to herald the start of the holiday season. Mariah Carey and Kelly Clarkson performed Christmas songs, as did ten other top-notch singers. The weather in New York City was perfect for the thousands of people that showed up for the annual event. Hosted by Matt Lauer, Savannah Gutherie, Al Roker and Natalie Morales from “Today,” the TV special was perfect for viewers of all ages.
The centerpiece of “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” was a giant Norway spruce tree, decked out with more than 45,000 lights to brighten the Plaza. Gutherie remarked on Wednesday, “The holiday season brings us all together.” She also added that she would definitely recommend seeing the Great Tree Lighting in person. The “NY Daily News” said that the country's most famous Christmas tree stands 76 feet tall and is topped by a Swarovski crystal star that measures 9’ in width.
Mariah Carey kicked off “Christmas In Rockefeller Center” on NBC with an incredible performance of “Joy To the World.” She also sang her hugely popular Christmas song, “All I Want For Christmas.” Newly married and pregnant Kelly Clarkson sang a rousing version of “Run, Run Rudolph.” Additional performers included Mary J. Blige, Ariana Grande, Jewel, Toni Braxton and Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Leona Lewis, Audra McDonald, and the Rockettes.
The grand finale was the lighting of the Great Tree in Rockefeller Plaza. Adorned with more than five miles of lights and lit by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, it produced gasps and a huge round of applause from the standing room only crowd.
