In recent years, more slave-themed movies have been released that depict the lives of slaves and the horrors of slavery. Many of these movies are based on true events and real people such as the 2013 movie, Twelve Years a Slave.
However, there are also many books that tell the story of life during slavery from the perspective of the slave. Former slaves tell these first-person narratives. While fiction can be moving and emotional, these slave narratives open the door to a life that most people have never experienced or even envisioned. And the stories are true.
Movies are an important medium for showing how the slaves lived and suffered. But slave narratives in books go deeper in telling of the feelings, hopelessness, and pain that slaves lived with for generations. Every slave tells his or her own story.
