Every year the country loses celebrities from the world of film, theater, political figures and musical greats. This year was no exception in the world of music of the singers that passed on.
Country music lost some of the great legends during the year, including Ray Price and George Jones. Ray Price, another legend in country music with hits ranging from ‘The Grand Tour’ and “For the Good Times’. Ray Price checked himself out of the hospital to return home with hospice care. Ray left the world, while at home with his wife by his side, on December 16, 2013 at the age of 87. Mindy McCready, took her life after years of struggle with substance use issues and mental health issues. Patti Page, famous for her hit ‘Tennessee Waltz’, passed away at the age of 85 on January 1, 2013. A tragic loss was the shooting of up and comer outlaw country singer Wayne Mills in Nashville, TN.
Throughout the year others passed away from the world of music. Chris Kelly was known as Mac Daddy in the teen rap duo Kriss Kross, famous for wearing their clothing backwards and hits like ‘Jump’, Chris became famous at 13 years old. On May 1, 2013 at the age of 34, Chris died of a drug overdose. Lou Reed was became a solo artist after spending some time in the group Velvet Underground. As a solo artist, Lou was a hit maker with powerful hits like ‘Take a walk on the wild side’. Lou passed away on October 27, 2013 at the age of 71 from liver disease. Patty Andrews, the last of the popular girl group The Andrew Sisters passed away on January 30, 2013 at the age of 94.
Unfortunately many listeners will only discover their music after and radio may have forgotten a few of the legends and were no longer playing their music until their passing. One may need to discover some of the artist on their own, but each contributed to the world of music, even if it was a short time or a one-hit wonder.
