Mortals of Myth is one of five new intro packs from Wizards of the Coast's upcoming expert Magic: The Gathering expansion set Journey Into Nyx. As we've seen with previous intro packs such as Manipulative Monstrosities, Blazing Beasts of Myth, Devotion to Darkness, Favors From Nyx, and Anthousa's Army, each Journey Into Nyx intro pack includes a how to play insert, tip guide, and two unopened Journey Into Nyx booster packs for an MSRP of $14.99.

Mortals of Myth features two rares: A premium foil Dawnbringer Charioteers and a Spear of Heliod.

Playing The Deck

Playing The Deck

You'll be able to lead with early creatures like Lagonna-Band Trailblazer and Oreskos Swiftclaw. There's also a nod to mana acceleration with Golden Hind.

At its core though, Mortals of Myth revolves around abusing heroic creatures such as Dawnbringer Charioteers and Phalanx Leader with strive cards like Ajani's Presence. With multiple heroic creatures and a strive card in hand, that's where you'll gain the most value.

Akroan Mastiff can help lock down threats or open up a path for your attackers while Banishing Light and Oppressive Rays serve as removal. Spear of Heliod pumps your army and allows you to deal with any creatures that manage to slip past your defenses.

A late game Pheres-Band Thunderhoof can grow to massive proportions and Quarry Colossus is a nice two for one.

Upgrading

Just as with all intro packs we've seen, you'll have to do some tinkering around with the deck list of Mortals of Myth if you plan on taking this deck away from the kitchen table and into a more competitive environment such as your local Friday Night Magic.

Ajani, Mentor of Heroes can help give Mortals of Myth some extra power, and Godsend is another amazing new card from Journey Into Nyx that'll really make your threat's fearsome. You may even consider running a god or two in the deck: Karametra, God of Harvest, Heliod, God of the Sun, and Nylea, God of the Hunt can all add late game oomph.

We realize the above cards are chase rares, and those looking to get a maximum bang for your buck are better off upgrading the deck's heroic creatures with Fabled Hero and or Anthousa, Setessan Hero in lieu of the deck's two main Pheres-Band Thunderhoof. Bow of Nylea is a versatile artifact worth considering too.

Our Verdict

Our Verdict

If you consider that the two booster packs of Journey Into Nyx would cost you almost $8 anyways, you're really only paying $7 for the deck. Mortals of Myth is a great starting point for newer players or those looking to sample how the new Strive cards from Journey Into Nyx interact with heroic creatures resulting in deadly consequences for your opponent.

Positives:

  • Amazing value for price.

Negatives:

  • Requires significant improvements for competitive play.
