On Friday afternoon, it was announced that Miley Cyrus is expected to top the Billboard Hot 100 with "Wrecking Ball" next week. This is very interesting due to the major backlash against Miley and her recent MTV VMA performance of "We Can't Stop/Blurred Lines." Miley's detractors certainly won't be happy that we rated her performance the best ever in the VMA's 30 year history.
Miley's performance wasn't new and was kind of trashy, but that was the whole point of it. Miley was pretty much giving her controlled Disney days a big middle finger. She also proved how puritanical Americans still are regarding female sexuality. Of course, Miley was criticized for the performance while her sex partner, Robin Thicke, was universally praised.
Even though this column gives Lady Gaga a lot of flack, her 2009 performance of "Paparazzi" comes in second. It was a time when Gaga could thrill audiences without trying too hard. Unfortunately for Gaga, her arch enemy Madonna also makes the list with her 1989 performance of "Express Yourself," a rare performance in which Madonna actually sings well.
