Week 3 of the college football season on Sept. 14 was defined by the Alabama Crimson Tide and Texas A&M Aggies. But while the Tide kept a stranglehold on college football with a 49-42 win over the Aggies, there were other games played in the meantime. In fact, there were almost a few big upsets to go with it, as the No. 11 Michigan Wolverines fell yards short of being upset by the Akron Zips.
Akron hadn’t won a road game in almost five years, while Michigan was coming off a statement win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Sept. 7. Yet the Zips were at the goal line in the final seconds against the Wolverines, down by just 28-24. However, the Wolverines stuffed the Zips on third-and-goal and blitzed them on fourth-and-goal to finally hold on.
Michigan kept its BCS hopes alive by the skin of its teeth, although the win did not offer style points. But for all of the Wolverines’ problems, they turned out better than other Big Ten programs in the other games of the day.
Here is a list of the big games in college football yesterday besides Alabama-Texas A&M, as the day offered some scares, statement victories, big offensive explosions and controversy.
