Megan Monroe aka Megan Elizabeth Monroe murder case: CBS 42 reported yesterday that a second suspect in the murder of Pinson woman whose body was found burned in Fairfield has been arrested. Police say 31-year-old Nathaniel Fortune aka Nathaniel Anthony Fortune was arrested for abuse of a corpse in the April 19 death of Megan Monroe aka Megan Elizabeth Monroe in Alabama. Monroe's body was found in the backyard of an empty house in Fairfield, according to Fairfield Police. Kenneth Childers, 27, was also arrested on Tuesday on the same charge. They are both being held on $100,000 bond each.
Fairfield firefighters and police responded to a fire call in the 500 block of 40th Street off of Lloyd Noland Parkway, where they found the body of a badly burned White female. Police had to use fingerprints in order to make an identification. The body was later identified as Megan Monroe, 22, of Pinson.
Police have not released a motive or the manner of death in the case but believe the woman was killed in another location, before being dumped and burned in Fairfield.
According to court records, Nathaniel Fortune was charged in 2011 with the December 1, 2002 murder of Napolean Henderson aka Napoleon Perry Henderson. That charge was later dismissed after a state's witness recanted his statement about seeing Nathaniel Fortune shoot Napoleon Henderson.
On Saturday, April 19 at around 11:30 a.m., police receive a call about a fire in the 500 block of 40th street in Fairfield. After the fire is extinguished, police discover the body of a White female.
By Easter Sunday, Michelle Stewart is worried that she has not heard from Megan. She has no idea that the Fairfield police have found her daughter dead outside a vacant house, according to WBRC News. The badly burned body is later identified through fingerprints as Megan Elizabeth Monroe. Police notify Monroe's mother of her daughter's death. The police investigation leads detectives to two Black males: Kenneth Childers and Nathaniel Fortune.
On Tuesday, April 29, 2014: The family celebrates the life of Megan Elizabeth Monroe. The funeral is held at the Kilgroe Funeral Home Leeds Chapel. Police arrest Kenneth Childers of Birmingham for abuse of a corpse. Days later, police secure a warrant for the home of Nathaniel Anthony Fortune. Police arrest Nathaniel Fortune and charge him with abuse of a corpse.
Update Thursday, April 30: Chief Davis tells Examiner that this murder case is not typical of the Fairfield area, and that he hasn't seen a case like this one in 23 years. He also confirms that Megan Monroe knew the two suspects. As of today, detectives are still waiting for the results of the autopsy to confirm manner of death.
Update Tuesday, May 6: According to Jefferson County Jail (Birmingham) records, Nathaniel Fortune is still being held on $100,000 bond for abuse of a corpse and a probation violation.
Kenneth Childers is also being held at the Jefferson County Jail. He is being held for abuse of a corpse on a $15,000 bond and a separate child support violation.
